Mumbai, 11th July 2024: The recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 not only showcased thrilling cricket but also highlighted the off-field camaraderie between Gautam Gambhir, Kolkata Knight Riders’ new mentor, and Virat Kohli, the star batter of Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The two were observed sharing hugs after matches and playfully addressing their previously tense relationship during media interactions.

In IPL 2023, Kohli and Gambhir, then mentoring Lucknow Super Giants, had a heated on-field altercation. However, this season signalled a thaw in their relationship as they appeared to have moved past their differences.

Gambhir’s recent appointment as the head coach of the Indian national cricket team, succeeding Rahul Dravid, has once again put the spotlight on the dynamics between these former teammates. According to reports, Kohli, a senior player and former captain, was not consulted before Gambhir’s appointment was officially announced.

“A lot of time remains for them to sit down and discuss things. However, the BCCI had to take a broader view with several young players expected to feature in the coming years,” a BCCI official reportedly told Hindustan Times.

The decision to appoint Gambhir was made by the BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), which includes Ashok Malhotra, Jatin Paranjape, and Sulakshana Naik. The CAC consulted multiple players, including Hardik Pandya, who is slated to lead the T20 side once more.

The committee unanimously recommended Gambhir for the head coach role, citing his aggressive approach and strategic acumen as valuable assets for the team’s future. Gambhir’s appointment is viewed as a forward-thinking step by the BCCI, aimed at cultivating a competitive and assertive playing style. His tenure as head coach will play a pivotal role in shaping the future trajectory of Indian cricket, particularly with the integration of numerous young talents into the national squad.
