Pune, 11th July 2024: The Indian National Congress has staked its claim on five assembly constituencies in Pune for the upcoming Maharashtra Legislative Assembly elections. Currently, 14 aspirants have applied to the party for the eight seats available in Pune city.

Similar to the Lok Sabha elections, the three parties have decided to jointly contest the upcoming assembly polls through the Mahavikas Aghadi alliance. However, seat allocation within the Mahavikas Aghadi is yet to be finalized. Nonetheless, all three alliance parties have begun their election preparations.

Earlier, the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Shiv Sena (UBT), constituents of the Mahavikas Aghadi, had laid claim to all seats in Pune City. In response, Congress has now asserted its claim on five out of the eight assembly constituencies in the city.

During a weekly meeting of Pune City Congress office bearers on Tuesday (9th June), it was decided to stake claims on these five seats. Currently, the Congress holds the MLA position in the Kasba Assembly Constituency with Ravindra Dhangekar. In the previous assembly elections, Congress candidates narrowly missed victory in Shivajinagar and Cantonment Constituencies.

Additionally, the party sources indicated that alongside these three constituencies, the decision was made in the meeting to also claim the Parvati and Hadapsar constituencies. The party had invited applications from potential candidates for the assembly elections, and to date, 14 aspirants have submitted their applications.
