Pune, 11th July 2024: In the wake of the Porsche accident in Kalyani Nagar, Pune Police have implemented crucial measures to improve the city’s traffic system. This includes actions against late-night operating bars and pubs, as well as the decision to cancel licenses for those caught driving under the influence of alcohol. In alignment with these efforts, Pune District Collector Dr. Suhas Diwase has made significant decisions regarding accident prevention in Pune. He has directed relevant departments to swiftly implement permanent measures to curb road accidents in both Pune city and its rural areas.

Dr. Diwase emphasized the importance of addressing accident-prone ‘blackspots’ by compiling data on frequent accident locations. This data will track reductions in accidents at these spots following implemented measures and identify peak accident times. He urged the Public Works Department, National Highways Authority of India, Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation, and Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporations to ensure high-quality road construction and develop both short-term and long-term plans. Speaking at the District Road Safety Committee meeting, Dr. Diwase reiterated the need for regular maintenance of road markings, reflectors, zebra crossings, and other safety features every three months.

Furthermore, he emphasized the provision of adequate funds for road safety initiatives and called for improved facilities such as toilets along highways managed by the National Highways Authority of India. Acknowledging higher accident rates among bike riders and pedestrians in Pune, he urged the Pune Police Traffic Branch to enforce stringent traffic rules and safety measures. Additionally, he instructed regular inspections of vehicles transporting school students.

Psychometric Career Assessment Test

Dr. Diwase highlighted that Pune district currently has 39 identified black spots for accidents. He reviewed ongoing efforts to mitigate risks at these spots during the meeting, where representatives from the Public Works Department, Pune Municipal Corporation, UNICEF, and IRAD presented strategies for installing safety features like rumblers, notice boards, and reflectors. The District Collector stressed the importance of proactive maintenance to ensure road safety measures remain effective, underscoring the need for regular painting of road markings and installation of necessary safety equipment.
