Washington DC, 8th July 2024: On Monday, US President Joe Biden reaffirmed his intention to remain in the presidential race, asserting he would not pursue re-election if he were not confident in his ability to defeat Donald Trump in 2024.

Addressing his fellow Democrats, Biden dispelled speculation about his withdrawal, emphasizing his commitment to seeing the race through and overcoming the Republican contender, Trump.

This declaration comes amid calls from some Democrats for the 81-year-old President to step down following a less-than-stellar performance in the June 27 presidential debate, where he appeared to falter, stammer, and lose his train of thought.

Biden highlighted his recent discussions with Democratic party leaders and voters, noting their support bolstered his resolve. He also positioned himself as the frontrunner in the Democratic presidential candidate race.

“We had a Democratic nomination process, and the voters have spoken clearly and decisively. I received over 14 million votes, 87 % of the total cast across the entire nominating process. I have nearly 3,900 delegates, making me the presumptive nominee of our party by a wide margin,” Biden stated.

In an interview last week, Biden remarked that only the “Lord Almighty” could convince him to withdraw, dismissing the idea that Democratic leaders might unite to urge him to step aside.

So far, five US lawmakers have publicly called for Biden to end his re-election bid, including Representative Angie Craig of Minnesota, the first Democratic House member from a battleground district, with more potentially joining the chorus.
