Massive Registration for Solar Power Scheme Leads to Website Troubles
Pune, 23rd June 2024: The central government launched the Pradhan Mantri Suryaghar Muft Bijli Yojana in February, aiming to provide free electricity through solar power generation to household consumers using up to 300 units of electricity per month. The scheme offers a subsidy of up to 78,000 rupees for consumers installing rooftop solar projects up to three kilowatts. Consumers need to register on a dedicated website prepared by the central ministry, with the Rural Electrification Corporation (REC) serving as the nodal agency for the scheme.
Following the announcement, the scheme received an overwhelming response, with 1,73,272 customers registering in the Maharashtra state so far. However, the massive influx of registrations has led to some complaints regarding the scheme’s website.
The Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has acknowledged the issues faced by electricity consumers and has mobilized a team of experts to address these problems, starting their work on Sunday.
On Saturday, senior officials from MSEDCL discussed the website issues with senior officials from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy via video conference. Representatives from agencies installing rooftop solar projects in Nagpur also participated in the discussion. The Union Ministry officials took note of the problems and agreed to send a team of high-level officials to Mumbai to resolve the issues. Additionally, it was decided that the Information Technology Department of MSEDCL will assist the central unit in fixing the website problems.
