Shivajinagar, 22nd June 2024: Pune residents recently witnessed a dramatic real-life ‘Chor-Police’ scenario on JM Road. This incident comes at a time when citizen security in Pune has been a major concern, with recent activities of the Koyta gang, a high-profile Porsche accident, and a rise in crime highlighting the city’s challenges.

Last night, chaos erupted when a thief broke into a mechanical parking lot on Jungli Maharaj (JM) Road. The thrilling chase began as the thief entered the parking area. Despite police efforts to apprehend him, the thief managed to evade capture by climbing up a building within the parking lot. The police even called in the fire brigade for assistance, but the thief remained elusive. Eventually, the police had to negotiate with the thief to come down. A large crowd gathered to witness the spectacle, but the thief ultimately escaped.

The mechanical parking lot, constructed by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) about 15 years ago in front of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Garden at a cost of nearly two crore rupees, is operated through a contractor. Due to inadequate revenue, the parking lot had been closed. PMC attempted to reissue the tender to a new contractor after withdrawing it, but there has been no response to their efforts.
