Pune: MIDC Approves Dedicated Waste Management Depot for Hinjawadi IT Park
Pune, 12th June 2024: The Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) has approved a proposal to establish a dedicated waste management depot at the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park in Hinjawadi. Work orders for the project have been issued recently, according to a senior MIDC official.
The new waste management facility will be located within the IT hub and is designed to process approximately 10 tonnes of waste generated daily. The Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park is home to over 150 companies, including several multinational corporations, employing more than four lakh people.
A plot in Phase III of the park has been identified for the plant, and a request for land allocation has been forwarded to MIDC headquarters. Construction of the facility will commence once the land allocation process is completed, with the project expected to take about one year to finish.
The need for a dedicated waste management depot arose from persistent issues of illegal garbage dumping by villagers living near the IT park. Despite multiple meetings between MIDC officials, members of the Hinjawadi Industries Association (HIA), and the district administration, the problem remained unresolved. Although the IT park falls under the jurisdiction of the Hinjawadi gram panchayat, the MIDC is responsible for managing its infrastructure.
Currently, MIDC has contracted three private agencies to collect waste from the IT park. These agencies then hand over the collected waste to the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) for processing.
The new waste management depot is expected to streamline waste processing within the IT park and address the longstanding issue of illegal dumping, ensuring a cleaner and more sustainable environment for the thriving tech hub.
