Pune, 11th June 2024: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) disaster management helpline received over 350 calls from distressed citizens reporting waterlogging, flooding, and potholes after heavy rainfall on Saturday evening.

Newly elected MP from Pune, Murlidhar Mohol, reviewed the city’s on-ground situation on Monday following the surge in complaints.

“PMC has deployed additional staffers at the ward level to address the complaints. More manpower is provided to a particular ward office based on need,” stated Ganesh Sonune, head of PMC’s disaster management.

Residents can register their complaints by contacting PMC at 02025506800 and 02025501269.

On Saturday evening, Shivajinagar recorded 101.7 mm of rainfall in just 2-3 hours, marking the highest one-day rainfall for June in over three decades. The last higher rainfall for the month was on June 8, 1991, with 123.3 mm.

The intense rainstorm led to massive traffic snarls due to widespread and severe waterlogging. Numerous trees were uprooted, and several low-lying areas were inundated with knee-deep rainwater. The chaos caused disruptions in rail and flight movements, with nearly 20 flights delayed on Saturday.

Affected residents criticized the PMC for inadequate nullah cleaning, attributing the flooding and waterlogging to the poor maintenance work.
