Pune, 10th June 2024: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) are set to introduce a new technology aimed at reducing long wait times at toll plazas. The Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) will soon enable money to be deducted instantly from Fastag accounts, allowing vehicles to pass through without stopping. This initiative aims to address the increasing delays caused by the growing number of vehicles on India’s expanding network of expressways and national highways.

What is the new technology?

Currently, paying toll tax at toll plazas often results in long lines, causing significant delays. The new GNSS technology will eliminate this issue by allowing vehicles to pay tolls without stopping. NHAI plans to integrate GNSS-based Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) within the existing Fastag system. Initially, a hybrid model will be used, combining RFID-based ETC and GNSS-based ETC to operate simultaneously.

How will It work?

NHAI will introduce GNSS lanes at toll plazas, facilitating seamless passage for vehicles using GNSS-based ETC. This system will not only reduce the time spent on paying tolls but will also ensure that vehicles pay tax based on the exact distance traveled.

Benefits of the New System

The GNSS-based toll system will significantly benefit the public by minimizing waiting times and enhancing toll collection efficiency. It will also prevent toll leakage and curb toll evasion. The integration with Fastag means that vehicles will experience a smoother and faster toll payment process.

Implementation Plan

The GNSS-based toll system will be implemented over an initial 2,000 kilometers within three months. Over the next nine months, it will be extended to 10,000 kilometers, and then to 50,000 kilometers within 15 months. The government has invited applications for this, with NHAI and IHMCL calling for a Global Expression of Interest by 22nd July.

NHAI officials state, “The GNSS technology is a game-changer for toll collection in India. It will ensure efficient toll collection and provide a hassle-free experience for travelers.”
