Pune, 9th June 2024: Pune city witnessed record-breaking rainfall in the last 24 hours. This single day’s rain accounted for 64% of the normal June precipitation, bringing the total to 209.2 mm and surpassing the average monthly quota of 184 mm. So far, Pune has received 315.4 mm of rainfall this year, which is 41.3% of its annual quota, and the monsoon season has just begun.

Dr. Anupam Kashyapi, the former head of weather forecasting at IMD Pune, forecasted that overcast conditions and intermittent rain are expected to continue. “Overall moderate rain is very likely in Pune city area today, with isolated heavy to very heavy rain in Pune ghat areas. A few moderate to intense spells of rain are very likely in the city, accompanied by moderate thunder,” he stated.

Dr. Kashyapi also reported that the monsoon has advanced further into Maharashtra, now covering regions including Mumbai and Pune. “The Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) in our state now passes through Thane, Ahmednagar, Beed, and then Nizamabad,” he added.

Vineet Kumar Singh, a research scientist, provided additional insights through a tweet. “Today, rain is likely to be less than yesterday. However, heavy rain is still expected in the late afternoon hours. From June 12-18, no significant rain is expected in Pune city, Pune ghats, or catchment areas, according to the latest IMD-GFS forecast. Waterfall-type rain will not start in the Pune ghats at least until June 20,” he mentioned.

The unprecedented rainfall has brought a mix of relief and challenges to Pune residents, with authorities urging caution and preparedness for the ongoing monsoon season.
