Alandi, 8th June 2024: An important decision has been made this year to address the clash between Warkaris and the police during last year’s Ashadhi Wari. This year, only a limited number of people will be allowed to participate in the departure of Mauli’s palanquin. Specifically, ninety Warkaris per Dindi will be permitted to enter the main temple during the departure of Saint Dnyaneshwar Maharaj’s palanquin.

Last year, a scuffle occurred between Warkaris and the police during the departure in Alandi. To prevent a repeat of such incidents, a meeting was held in Alandi today, chaired by Principal District & Sessions Judge Mahendra Mahajan. The meeting included prominent members of the Warkari sect, Dindi owners and workers, and representatives from the police and administration. It was decided that 90 pilgrims per Dindi would be allowed during this year’s Ashadhi Wari. The Warkari sect has limited the number of Warkaris to 59 Dindis, including 47 Dindis of Mana and 9 sub-Dindis, to avoid any potential stampede.

This decision aims to ensure that the Palkhi ceremony proceeds smoothly, as issues in the past two years have marred the event. Traditionally, 56 Warkaris per Dindi are admitted during the palanquin procession’s departure. Last year, the number was 75 Warkaris per Dindi, but some devotees attempted to forcefully enter the temple, leading to a clash with the Pimpri Chinchwad police. In response, there was a demand to allow 100 workers per Dindi this year. However, it was decided to admit only 90 workers in representative form.

What Happened Last Year?

The palanquin of Saint Dnyaneshwar Maharaj was scheduled to depart on 11th June 2023. A large crowd of devotees was expected. Last year, an incident occurred during this ceremony, where a scuffle broke out between Warkaris and the police in the temple area over entering for darshan. Only 75 Warkaris were allowed per Dindi, but some devotees tried to break the barricades and enter the temple. The police intervened to stop them, leading to an argument and aggressive actions from both sides. Eventually, the police managed to pacify the situation, but several Warkaris were detained.

This year’s measures aim to prevent such incidents and ensure the safety and smooth conduct of the Ashadhi Wari.
