Crackdown on Pune Nightlife: Bars and Pubs Under Scrutiny

Pune, 6th June 2024: The Pune district collector held a hearing on Wednesday for 60 rooftop bars and pubs owners who were temporarily closed due to violations such as serving alcohol to minors and exceeding time limits.

Dr. Suhas Diwase, the district collector, stated that some bar owners were directed to fulfill compliance requirements and provide necessary documentation. Final decisions on each case will be made based on merit, with no specific timeframe provided. The State Excise Department has cracked down on over 300 establishments, including hotels, bars, pubs, and permit rooms, for violating regulations.

This crackdown follows the tragic Kalyani Nagar accident on May 19, where an inebriated minor crashed his Porsche into a two-wheeler, instantly killing IT professionals Anis Awadhiya and Ashwini Costa. As a result, Pune’s nightlife has been severely impacted, with the Excise Department taking stringent measures against bars and pubs breaching regulations, leading to permanent closures of some establishments.
