Pune, 23rd May 2024: The Pune Excise Department has sealed 32 clubs over the past two days. This sweeping action saw 27 clubs being shut down last night alone. Club owners, feeling targeted, have expressed their frustration to Punekar News, alleging that they are being penalized for minor infractions despite their previous compliance.
“Until last week, everything was normal as we regularly ‘greased’ the palms of officials from the excise department, municipal corporation, and police with cash, liquor, and other demands. After the unfortunate incident in Kalyani Nagar, they are now behind us. They are recalling all sorts of rules and regulations and taking action,” said one of the disgruntled club owners.
Officials from the Pune Excise Department confirmed to Punekar News that more actions are being taken against clubs and restaurants today. The crackdown began on Tuesday night when State Excise Department officials launched an inspection drive, resulting in numerous cases being filed across various locations.
The number of establishments selling liquor has significantly risen in areas such as Viman Nagar, Kalyani Nagar, Koregaon Park, Kharadi, Baner, Pimpri, Chinchwad, Bhosari, Chakan, Hinjawadi, Talegaon, Dehuroad, and Bavdhan. Additionally, many highway dhabas and city hotels have reportedly been selling liquor without the requisite licenses from the State Excise Department, a lapse that has seemingly been overlooked until now.
