Pune, 23rd May 2024: The state excise department faces criticism following revelations of widespread alcohol service to minors in Pune’s pubs. In response, the department has proposed stringent measures, including hefty fines for bars found serving alcohol to individuals under 25 years old.

Santosh Jagdale, Deputy Superintendent of the State Excise Department in Pune, disclosed, “The department has drafted regulations, subject to discussion with the Pune District Collector, regarding serving alcohol to minors. Proposed penalties include an immediate fine of Rs 50,000 or even license revocation or temporary closure for establishments found violating these rules.”

Jagdale emphasized, “Regarding age restrictions, mild alcoholic beverages like beer can be served to individuals aged 21 and above, while hard liquor can only be served to those aged 25 and older.”

Pub owners have been directed to verify the age of patrons at entry points using security personnel and to install CCTV cameras outside their premises. Additionally, staff are instructed to request proof of age, such as Aadhaar cards, PAN cards, or driver’s licenses, from anyone appearing underage.

To ensure compliance, the state excise department plans to monitor CCTV footage regularly. Inspection teams will scrutinize recordings from pubs, bars, and hotels to verify adherence to age verification protocols.

These measures aim to curb underage drinking and promote responsible alcohol consumption in Pune’s nightlife establishments.
