Pune, 11th May 2024: The serious issue of road accidents in Pune has once again surfaced. This year, from January to March, the city has witnessed 382 accidents, resulting in the loss of 92 lives. Shockingly, this means that daily, one individual succumbs to a road accident in Pune, with four accidents occurring each day. Despite claims from government agencies that accidental deaths have decreased due to measures taken at black spots, the problem persists.

The Highway Police Maharashtra State has released accident statistics, revealing that between January and March of this year, Pune city saw 382 accidents, claiming 92 lives. Comparatively, this marks an increase of 77 accidents from the same period last year, while deaths have decreased by 13. Additionally, rural areas of Pune recorded 507 accidents during this time frame, resulting in 221 fatalities. Although there’s been a reduction in accidental deaths compared to the previous year, the city still witnesses one death daily, while rural areas witness two to three deaths. This underscores the urgent need for long-term measures to prevent accidents and reduce accidental deaths.

In light of this situation, Sanjeev Bhor, the Regional Transport Officer in charge of Pune, stated, “Over the past few months, the National Road Safety Council has taken steps to address blackspots in both urban and rural areas. Officials from the Regional Transport Office, Public Works Department, and National Highways Authority of India conducted inspections on key roads such as Pune-Solapur, Pune-Nagar, Pune-Kolhapur, and Pune-Mumbai. These inspections identified issues at blackspot locations, following which an immediate action plan was devised. Urgent measures have been implemented on major roads by this plan.”

He added, “Many of the blackspots were addressed from a road engineering standpoint. Additionally, encroachments on numerous major roads were cleared. As a result of frequent accidents on Navale Bridge, the speed limit has been reduced there. All these measures have contributed to the reduction in accidental deaths.”
