Pune, 26th March 2024: With the Lok Sabha elections on the horizon, stringent measures are being put in place to maintain law and order in the region. District Collector Dr Suhas Diwase has announced the imposition of restrictions under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure 1973 and Section 17(3)(a) and (b) of the Arms Act 1959.

The Election Commission of India has outlined the election schedule, prompting authorities to take proactive steps to ensure a peaceful and secure environment during the electoral process. These restrictions will be enforced until June 6 to facilitate the smooth conduct of the elections and to prevent any potential disturbances.

Under these regulations, citizens are prohibited from possessing and transporting licensed firearms, weapons, and ammunition. However, exemptions have been granted to officers, employees, and security personnel entrusted with the protection of banks and public property. It is incumbent upon banks and public institutions to ensure that their firearms are not misused during the election period.

The order issued by the District Collector emphasizes that any violation of these restrictions will be met with consequences under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code. This stern approach aims to uphold the integrity of the electoral process and safeguard public safety throughout the election period.
