Pune, 19th March 2024: The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) is spearheading the development of the Hinjawadi to Shivajinagar metro line, utilizing a public-private partnership (PPP) model. Expanding on this initiative, plans are now underway to extend this route from Shivajinagar to Loni Kalbhor, also on a PPP basis. A comprehensive project feasibility report has been submitted to PMRDA outlining the viability of this proposed extension.

Originally, the Pune Metro project from Hinjawadi to Shivajinagar has been undertaken in collaboration with the Tata Group. With an eye towards expansion, a project development plan has been devised to extend this route further, encompassing the stretch from Shivajinagar to Loni Kalbhor. Additionally, plans for metro lines connecting Hadapsar to Saswad Road and Race Course to Swargate are also in the pipeline, amounting to a total length of 23 kilometres. PMRDA has engaged a consultancy firm to assess the feasibility of these proposed routes, with the firm now submitting its findings to PMRDA, affirming the possibility of implementing the metro project on this expanded route through the PPP model.

During a Pune United Metropolitan Transport Authority (PUMTA) meeting, the Divisional Commissioner advocated for streamlined coordination, suggesting that either PMRDA or Mahametro should oversee the expanded metro lines to ensure uniformity. Accordingly, PMRDA has initiated the process of appointing a consultant to evaluate the economic feasibility of executing these projects through PPP arrangements, in line with the Commissioner’s directive.
