Pune, 19th March 2024: Ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar has issued orders to revoke police protection provided to leaders of various political parties, construction professionals, and social workers in Pune city. Typically, police protection is extended to leaders of political parties, construction experts, social activists, and prominent individuals upon application to the Police Commissionerate. Presently, this coverage has been granted to 110 individuals in the city, necessitating the deployment of over 350 police personnel.

However, in light of the approaching elections, 85 individuals have had their police protection withdrawn. Commissioner Amitesh Kumar emphasized reallocating these police resources effectively during this period. While police presence will be maintained at sensitive locations, it has been reduced to 25 sites where deemed unnecessary.

Furthermore, 54 individuals who had applied for police protection have had their requests cancelled. Concurrently, citizens possessing firearms licenses have been instructed to deposit their weapons, such as pistols and revolvers. This measure aims to enhance security and uphold law and order in the city. Additionally, heightened surveillance efforts, including the investigation of suspicious vehicles through roadblocks, have been implemented to bolster security measures.
