Equal Water Supply Scheme in Pune Nears Completion, Anticipated to Resolve Unequal Distribution Issues
Pune, 8th March 2024: The implementation of the Equal Water Supply Scheme, aimed at ensuring fair water distribution across Pune, is anticipated to conclude this year following a time extension. Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) Commissioner and Administrator Vikram Kumar asserted that the project is nearing completion and will be operational in the coming days.
Initiated by the PMC for 2.5 thousand crores, this scheme intends to provide equitable water access throughout the city while addressing leakages and distribution errors. Initially sanctioned in 2015, the scheme’s actual commencement was delayed until 2018 due to the appointment of consultants and comprehensive project planning. Originally slated for completion in five years, the timeline was disrupted by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The deadline was extended from April 2023 to November 2023. However, despite this extension, work on the scheme faced further interruptions.
As of now, progress has been made in 56 out of the total 141 zones, with 960 km of water channels and 145,000 water meters successfully installed. Zone number four poses particular challenges, yet PMC Commissioner Kumar remains optimistic about meeting the extended deadline, assuring that the project will be concluded by the end of July.
