Pimpri Chinchwad Police Commissionerate Visitors And Staff Face Air Pollution Due To Adjacent Redevelopment Site

Chinchwad, 15th February 2024: The Pimpri Chinchwad Police Commissionerate is witnessing a ‘redevelopment construction site’ which is located just adjacent to the Police Commissioner’s office. The ongoing demolition process involves breaking down the current structure, excavation, and clearing debris using large machinery. However, as shared by the people from that area, the developer appears to have neglected necessary measures for controlling air pollution, resulting in a significant increase in pollution.
Staff and visitors at the PCPC (Pimpri Chinchwad Police Commissionerate) have noticed a deterioration in air quality due to excavation and debris movement. Many police officers and visitors who park their vehicles in this area encounter severe pollution while walking to the Commissionerate.
When contacted, Pimpri Chinchwad Police PRO ACP Satish Mane told Punekar News, “Work at this site commenced a day or two ago. It’s evident that our team is experiencing air pollution due to the demolition of the current structure for redevelopment. Ideally, the developer should have covered the building with green cloth or tarpaulin to mitigate air pollution, but unfortunately, this has not been done. We will be sending a letter to Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to prompt appropriate action in this regard.”

Despite multiple attempts, Pradeep Jambhle Patil, Additional Commissioner of PCMC, could not be reached for his comments.
It’s worth noting that at the end of 2023, the PCMC initiated action against construction sites responsible for exacerbating air pollution and causing significant increases in the Air Quality Index (AQI). The AQI range up to 50 is considered good, and 51 to 100 is considered ‘satisfactory’. During this initiative, PCMC issued notices to more than 400 construction sites and collected fines totalling more than Rs 30 lakhs, under the provisions of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. Additionally, PCMC has implemented vehicle dust suppression systems and road-washer systems to clean city roads.
It will be intriguing to observe how promptly PCMC addresses this issue and advises the concerned developer to mitigate pollution at the site.
