Pune, 16th January 2024: In response to the ongoing protests seeking reservation for the Maratha community, the Maharashtra State Backward Class Commission will conduct a survey to establish the community’s backwardness. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has already appointed 1,500 employees for this task, and given the scale of the survey covering approximately 12 lakh households, preparations are underway to appoint an additional 1,500 employees.

The protests by the Maratha community in recent months have been focused on securing reservations from the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category. However, the Maharashtra Government has proposed a separate quota for the Maratha community instead.

The Maharashtra government has instructed the Maharashtra State Backward Classes Commission to investigate the backwardness of the Maratha community. This involves conducting a comprehensive survey across the state.

In Pune city alone, the survey will cover 12 lakh households. To execute this, 1,500 employees have been appointed, with a supervisor assigned for every 15 employees. As each house in Pune city needs to be surveyed, the PMC administration recognizes the need for additional manpower and has initiated the process of appointing another 1,500 employees.

Chetna Kerure, Deputy Commissioner, stated, “A survey will be conducted in all the houses in the city to assess the backwardness of the Maratha community. Two and a half thousand employees are required for this purpose. Currently, 1,900 employees have been appointed in two phases, and the survey will commence upon the commission’s order.”

It has come to light that the initial list of appointed employees included the names of retired and deceased individuals. This error occurred due to the Computer Department sending a two-month-old list. The administration has rectified this mistake by removing the names of retired and deceased employees from the list. The correction ensures that the appointed employees are actively participating in the survey.
