Pune, 22nd December 2023: In the transformative era of India’s Amrit Kaal, Indian Railways (IR) is committed to meeting the diverse needs of a more aspirational society. In order to cater to the requirements of millions of daily visitors and passengers, Indian Railways has been consistently upgrading facilities and amenities at its stations.

In the pursuit to enhance the wellness and welfare of passengers visiting railway stations, IR has conceptualized a policy framework to establish Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Kendras (PMBJKs) in circulating areas and concourses of stations, which will be operated by Licensees.

The main objective is to promote the Government of India’s mission to make quality medicines and consumables (Janaushadhi products) available for all by enabling passengers/visitors at railway stations to easily access Janaushadhi products. In addition to this, PMBJK will enhance wellness and welfare among all sections of society by providing medicines at affordable prices, creating employment opportunities, and generating avenues for entrepreneurs to open PMBJKs.

From Pune Division, Pimpri Station has been nominated for the opening of PMBJK. The proximity of the identified location is such that it is accessible to passengers as well as commuters passing through the road.

An e-auction for the fabrication of the outlet was scheduled on 19.12.2023, in which the highest bid of Rs. 5,111/- was received. The successful bidder, M/S Deluxe Pharmacy, was issued the Letter of Acceptance (LOA) the same day. The vendor will commence the work from 4th of January 2024.

PMBJK outlets will be facilitated by PMBI (Pharmaceutical & Medical Device Bureau of India). PMBI shall facilitate the supply of affordable, quality, generic medicines, surgical items, consumables, etc. PMBI software will be used for selling and billing of medicines. In addition to this, PMBJK outlets will be operated by B. Pharma/D. Pharma degree holders.

This is the first in Central Railway that is ready to operate. The same has become ready in record time with consistent efforts from the Commercial, Stores, and Engineering Department.

The branded (Generic) medicines are sold at significantly higher prices than their unbranded generic equivalents, although they are identical in therapeutic value. Given the widespread poverty across the country, making reasonably priced quality generic medicines available in the market would benefit everyone.
