Pune, 16th December 2023: In a significant update on the water leakage issue at Temghar Dam, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis disclosed that there has been a remarkable 93% reduction in leakage after the implementation of leakage prevention measures. However, despite these efforts, the dam is still experiencing a leakage rate of 197 liters per second.

Addressing questions posed by Khed-Alandi MLA Dilip Mohite Patil during the winter session, Deputy Chief Minister Fadnavis provided insights into the ongoing efforts to curb extensive water leakage from Temghar Dam in Pune district. Recognizing the severity of the issue, the state appointed a retired Secretary of the Water Resources Department to investigate the causes and propose solutions. This led to the formation of the Temghar Dam Expert Committee (TDEC), chaired by VM Ranade, which conducted a thorough inspection and recommended both short-term spill prevention measures and long-term dam strengthening measures.

Following the committee’s recommendations, emergency short-term spill prevention measures were initiated in 2017, with an estimated total expenditure of Rs. 252.66 crore. Of this budget, Rs. 101.51 crore has already been utilized for the ongoing work. It was highlighted that Temghar Dam has been experiencing leakage since 2010, with the leakage rate reaching 2587 liters per second in 2016-17. After the implementation of spill prevention measures, there was a significant 93% reduction, bringing the leakage rate down to 197 liters per second.

In response to concerns, Deputy Chief Minister Fadnavis assured that the process of obtaining revised administrative approval is underway to achieve a 100% halt to water leakage.
