Pune, 10th December 2023: In a significant breakthrough, the Cyber Police Station in Pune successfully exposed a sophisticated scam involving the misuse of a woman’s Aadhaar card and orchestrated attempts to extort money.

The accused, claiming to represent FedEx Courier Services, had falsely implicated the victim in a drug trafficking case. The Pune Cyber Police, under the leadership of Commissioner Retesh Kumaarr, played a crucial role in the investigation, leading to the arrest of the prime suspect across Maharashtra State borders.

The accused, operating from Delhi, contacted the female victim under the guise of a FedEx Courier Services representative. Falsely claiming to have intercepted a parcel containing narcotics addressed to Taiwan, the perpetrator coerced the victim into believing she was entangled in a serious crime. Further, the accused misused the victim’s Aadhaar card, impersonating Cybercrime Mumbai officials, to extract personal information and demand a payment of Rs 3 lakhs to clear the alleged drug-laden parcel.

The Cyber Police in Pune have registered a case under IPC sections 419 (Cheating), 420 (Cheating), and 34 (Common Intention). Additionally, charges under Section 66C (Identity Theft) and 66D (Cheating by Personation by using Computer Resource) of the Information Technology Act were levied.

The primary suspect, identified as Naresh Jain alias Sureshbhai Desai, was apprehended from Saswad, Pune. During the investigation, it was revealed that Jain had facilitated the scam by opening a bank account and sending essential documents to an accomplice named Azhar Atiq Khan in Bharuch, Gujarat.

Recognizing the involvement of suspects in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, a specialized team from the Pune Cyber Police embarked on a mission to locate and apprehend the accused. However, it was later discovered that the main suspect, Azhar Atiq Khan, had already been arrested by the Cyber Police Station in Shahdara, Delhi. Khan is now under police remand until December 13, 2023.
