Pune To Celebrate Pedestrian Day On December 11 With Walking Plaza On Laxmi Road
Pune, 7th December 2023: In celebration of Pedestrian Day on December 11, , the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced the transformation of Laxmi Road into a dedicated walking plaza.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic, Vijaykumar Magar, has implemented temporary traffic changes to facilitate this initiative, with the road closure in effect from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The event aims to raise awareness about pedestrian safety and rights, emphasizing the importance of creating pedestrian-friendly infrastructure.
Traffic diversions:
– Traffic Restrictions: All types of vehicles are restricted from Sevasadan Chowk to Umbrya Ganpati Chowk to Garud Ganpati Chowk on Laxmi Road during the specified time.
– Changes to the traffic plan will be made as necessary based on the traffic situation between Sevasadan Chowk and Umbrya Ganpati Chowk.
– Alternative Routes:
– Vehicles from Belbaug Chowk to Tilak Chowk on Laxmi Road should turn right at Sevasadan Chowk and take Bajirao Road.
– Vehicles from RB Kumthekar Road to Laxmi Road should turn left at Chitale Corner and take Bajirao Road.
– Vehicles from Ramanbaug Chowk to Umbrya Ganapati Chowk should take the route via NC Kelkar Road through Tilak Chowk instead of Laxmi Road.
– Vehicles from Nimbalkar Talim Chowk to Kunte Chowk should go directly to their destination via NC Kelkar Road through Tilak Chowk instead of Laxmi Road.
Pedestrian Day serves to highlight the significance of pedestrians in the urban landscape and address safety concerns. PMC, in collaboration with Pune Traffic Police, Laxmi Road Traders Association, and Pathariwale Association Seva Sanstha, is actively participating in the program.
Activities and Programs:
– Various programs and activities have been planned for Pedestrian Day, including:
1. “Happy Street” games by Times of India and Maharashtra Times Group.
2. Road safety workshop for children organized by Safe Kids Foundation.
3. Sensitization and universal accessibility workshop for blind disabled citizens by EKansh Trust.
4. Pedestrian rights workshop by Save Pune Traffic Movement (SPTM).
5. Panel exhibition on public transport and the development of old Pune.
6. Panel presentation on road design by Pune Municipal Corporation through ITDP organization.
7. Street play on mental health by Saathi Haath Badhana Foundation.
8. Grand Rangoli on Pedestrian Day by Rang TarangKala Academy.
9. Bravery game for history-loving citizens.
10. Music and musical arts presentation by RASTA NGO.
11. Air quality testing and demonstration by various environmental organizations.
Citizens are encouraged to participate in the festivities, with special bicycles provided by Deccan Gymkhana Metro Station and PMC Metro Station. Vehicle owners are requested to use alternative roads on this day.
PMC has been actively implementing measures for pedestrian safety, including clean and safe footpaths, regularly painted zebra stripes for crossings, refuge islands, signals, information boards, and street lights.
The PMC aims to make walking safer and more attractive, aligning with the “National Urban Transport Policy.” Pedestrian Day is a crucial initiative to promote walking, enhance public transport efficiency, and reduce private vehicle usage.
