Pune, 4th December 2023: Mahatma Jyotiba Phule, Savitribai Phule started the first school for girls at Bhide Wada in Budhwar Peth. Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has started the process of taking possession of the Wada as per the order of the Supreme Court of India to make a national monument there. Around 10.30 pm, a heavy police team, fire brigade and PMC team was deployed for the take over.

Earlier in the day, the administration issued a notice to the owners and tenants for land acquisition and made a panchnama. Meanwhile, the tenants had applied to the Supreme Court for possession of the premises, but the court did not get any relief.

The Phule couple started the first school for girls in Bhide Wada in 1848. A resolution was passed in the PMC that a national memorial should be made in this Wada in memory of both of them. After starting the process of possession of the premises, the owners and tenants of the premises filed a petition in the Bombay High Court. After 13 years, the court decided in favour of the PMC. Against that, a petition was filed in the Supreme Court of India.

There too the judgment was given in favor of the PMC. The petitioners were also ordered to hand over this place to the PMC within one month. The petition filed by the tenants of Bhide Wada in the Supreme Court seeking an extension of time to take possession of the premises has also been rejected today.

As the deadline given by the court expired on December 3, PMC started the process of land acquisition today. This morning, officials of the Land Acquisition and Management Department of PMC tried to give notice to the owners and tenants of Bhide Wada. But most of the shops there were closed. The PMC administration has taken panchnama. Additional Commissioner Vikas Dhakne informed that further action will be taken through the Municipal Corporation and Police.

Vikram Kumar, PMC Commissioner said, “As per the order of the Supreme Court, the process of taking possession of the Bhide Wada site has been started. We will take possession of the place soon.”
