Koregaon Park, 4th December 2023: In a recent ruling, the Additional District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has directed MakeMyTrip (India) Pvt Ltd to pay Rs 2 lakh 84 thousand 14, along with seven per cent interest from 2019 onwards, to a complainant who was not refunded the remaining amount after cancelling booked flight tickets.

The Commission, chaired by Jayant Deshmukh and comprising members Shubhangi Dunakhe and Pranali Sawant, issued the verdict in response to a complaint filed by a Koregaon Park resident against the tour company. The complainant had booked 13 flight tickets worth Rs 3 lakh 4 thousand 440 for a trip to Chicago, Miami, and Los Angeles with his wife.

After cancelling the tickets, the company assured the complainant via email on April 16, 2019, that the remaining amount of Rs 2,84,140 would be refunded within 12 hours, post deduction of cancellation fees, e-coupon charges, and service tax. However, the company failed to fulfil this commitment, and despite repeated requests for a refund, false assurances were provided. With no response to the notice served, the complainant approached the Consumer Commission.

Although the company appeared before the commission, it did not submit a written reply despite being given an opportunity. Taking into account the complainant’s affidavit, written arguments, and the company’s statements, the commission ruled in favour of the complainant, ordering MakeMyTrip to pay the specified amount along with seven per cent annual interest. The verdict also stipulates compensation of Rs 30,000 and an additional Rs 5,000 towards the cost of the complaint.
