Pune, 28th November 2023: The commencement of the first Rabi irrigation cycle for agriculture in rural areas from the Khadakwasla project was initiated on Monday (27th November). This water circulation is released from the Khadakwasla dam through a canal and is expected to provide approximately 5.5 Thousand Million Cubic Feet (TMC) of irrigation water over the next 60 days.

The decision to start this irrigation cycle was made during a canal committee meeting chaired by Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister and Guardian Minister Ajit Pawar. Given the inadequate rainfall this year resulting in low dam levels and the potential for water scarcity this summer due to erratic rainfall patterns, the release of this water flow is crucial for agricultural and drinking water needs.

Currently, there is a total of 25.73 TMC, or 88 per cent water storage, in the four dams—Temghar, Varasgaon, Panshet, and Khadakwasla—that supply water to the city. The first Rabi irrigation cycle will involve the release of 5.5 TMC of water. This will particularly benefit agricultural activities in Daund, Indapur, and Haveli talukas. Additionally, the released water will contribute to meeting the drinking water requirements of the citizens.
