Pune, 28th November 2023: The State Commission of Maharashtra for Backward Class is set to convene a crucial meeting in Pune on Friday, December 1, to deliberate on the validation of the social backwardness criteria for the Maratha community.

Under the chairmanship of retired Judge Anand Niragude, the Commission will also discuss seeking approval from the state government for conducting a comprehensive survey of various social elements.

The Commission, initiated by a directive from the Maharashtra State Government, aims to establish the social backwardness of the Maratha community. The pertinent question arises as to why, despite being advanced and socially progressive for the past 60-70 years, the Maratha society seems to have lagged while other communities progressed. To address this, the Commission has embarked on a thorough examination, acknowledging the need for concrete evidence before presenting any findings.

The Constitutional Bench of the Supreme Court has mandated that a report be generated regarding the Maratha reservation, in adherence to prescribed guidelines. The Commission is obligated to furnish this report, highlighting the reasons behind the perceived decline of the Maratha community’s social status.

Additionally, the Commission clarified that the decisions made during the previous week’s meeting will be subject to approval in the upcoming session. The pivotal matter of obtaining the state government’s permission for a comprehensive survey of all social elements is also on the agenda. This survey aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the social dynamics at play and inform the Commission’s future recommendations.
