Pune, 7th November 2023: Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has issued a stern warning to Maharashtra citizens, advising them to disregard any messages or calls demanding online payments through personal mobile numbers or unknown apps, as fraudulent attempts to swindle unsuspecting individuals become increasingly common.

Several deceptive messages have been circulating, falsely claiming that the power supply will be interrupted at 9:30 PM due to the non-payment of last month’s electricity bills. These “SMS” or “WhatsApp” messages and letters also instruct recipients to immediately contact a provided personal mobile number, sometimes coupled with mobile phone calls. Interestingly, these deceptive messages are being sent to individuals who have no connection to electricity bills or have already paid their dues.

Responding to these fake messages, which urge recipients to make online payments by following a link provided by a personal mobile number or downloading suspicious software, can have severe consequences, including unauthorized access to personal devices and the subsequent theft of funds from bank accounts.

To ensure the safety and security of electricity consumers, MSEDCL has encouraged the use of its official mobile app and website, www.mahadiscom.in, for making secure electricity bill payments. Genuine messages regarding electricity services are sent through the computerized system to customers who have registered their mobile numbers along with their customer numbers. Such messages are identified with Sender IDs such as VM-MSEDCL, VK-MSEDCL, AM-MSEDCL, and JM-MSEDCL. Importantly, MSEDCL never requests customers to contact personal mobile numbers, share bank OTPs, or download software.

In case of any suspicions or concerns, electricity consumers are advised to reach out to the 24-hour toll-free numbers 1912, 18002123435, or 18002333435, or contact the National Cyber Helpline at 1930.

In a statement, Rajendra Pawar, Chief Engineer of Pune MSEDCL, said, “The need for vigilance is paramount. I caution individuals not to respond to messages regarding power cuts from personal mobile numbers and to avoid opening online links sent via personal numbers or downloading any unverified software or apps. These precautions are vital in protecting individuals from falling victim to fraudulent schemes.”
