Tata Group Makes History: India’s First iPhone Manufacturer

Pune, 27th October 2023: In a groundbreaking move, the Tata Group has acquired Wistron’s Indian operations, propelling India into the forefront of global electronics manufacturing. The acquisition will allow Tata to manufacture and assemble Apple iPhones within India, targeting both domestic and international markets. Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar broke the exciting news on the social media platform X, emphasizing the speed of this transformation.

Chandrasekhar exclaimed, “Within a mere two and a half years, Tata Group will commence iPhone production on Indian soil, catering to markets worldwide. Congratulations to the dedicated Tata team for taking the reins of Wistron’s operations.”

 

Accompanying this statement was an official press release from Wistron, announcing that their board had met and approved the sale of its subsidiaries, SMS InfoComm (Singapore) Pte. Ltd. and Wistron Hong Kong Limited, to Tata Electronics Private Limited (TEPL). This sale includes Wistron’s entire 100% indirect stake in Wistron InfoComm Manufacturing (India) Private Limited.

 

The press release outlined the next steps, stating, “Upon the confirmation and signing of the relevant agreements by both parties, the deal will proceed to obtain the necessary approvals. Following the completion of the transaction, Wistron will make the required announcements and filings in accordance with applicable regulations.”

 

This historic announcement officially establishes Tata Group as the inaugural Indian entity to produce iPhones, marking a significant achievement for the conglomerate and highlighting India’s growing influence in the global electronics manufacturing landscape.

 

Chandrasekhar gave credit to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his “visionary PLI scheme,” acknowledging its pivotal role in catapulting India into a “trusted and major hub for smartphone manufacturing and exports.”

 

He went on to say, “The Government of India, represented by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), stands fully in support of the growth of Global Indian Electronics companies that will, in turn, support global Electronic brands seeking to establish India as their trusted manufacturing and talent partner. This aligns with the Prime Minister’s goal of making India a global electronics powerhouse.”
