Pune: Financial Strain On MSEDCL As 16 Lakh Consumers Owe 354 Crores In Western Maharashtra
Pune, 27th October 2023: In Western Maharashtra, there are 16,43,065 electricity consumers in the domestic, commercial, and industrial categories with outstanding arrears of 354 crores. To expedite the recovery campaign, the power supply is being interrupted. As a response to this situation, Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited has issued an appeal to electricity consumers to cooperate by settling their current and overdue bills.
To facilitate the payment of these outstanding bills, official electricity bill payment centres of MSEDCL in Pune, Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara, and Solapur districts will remain open during office hours on the upcoming public holidays, which fall on Saturday (28th) and Sunday (29th). Over the last 25 days, electricity supply has been disconnected for 29,068 arrears in Western Maharashtra, with Pune district leading at 18,984, followed by Satara at 2,259, Solapur at 3,335, Kolhapur at 2,578, and Sangli district with 1,912 defaulters.
The present arrears status of household, commercial, and industrial customers in the Pune regional division is as follows: Pune district has 222 crores 51 lakhs (7,96,435 customers), Satara has 22 crores 75 lakhs (1,86,815 customers), Solapur has 51 crores 72 lakhs (2,62,170 customers), Sangli has 26 crores 23 lakhs (1,98,362 customers), and Kolhapur district has an outstanding amount of Rs. 30 crores 81 lakhs (1,98,362 customers). The financial condition of MSEDCL is under strain due to the irregular payment of electricity bills. The financial health of MSEDCL relies heavily on the timely recovery of these bills.
In response to this, Pune Regional Director Ankush Nale has appealed to electricity consumers to cooperate by settling both their current and overdue bills. Consumers have the option to make unlimited online payments for electricity bills through the website www.mahadiscom.in or via the mobile app provided by MSEDCL. Additionally, MSEDCL has introduced the facility of payment through RTGS or NEFT for all small-pressure customers with bills exceeding Rs. 5,000, with the necessary information available on the customer’s electricity bill.
As part of the ongoing campaign, an independent team is conducting investigations into the electricity connections of defaulters who have experienced power supply interruptions. If such defaulters are found to be using electricity from neighbours or other sources through unauthorized wires or cables, legal action is taken against both the neighbours and the defaulters, as per Section 135/138 of the Indian Electricity Act 2003.
