New ITAT Members To Get 3x Salary Hike To Rs. 2,50,000 Per Month

The Ministry of Finance has issued a notification dated 1st June 2017 titled the “Tribunal, Appellate Tribunal and other Authorities (Qualifications, Experience and other Conditions of Service of Members) Rules, 2017” by which various conditions relating to the appointment of Tribunal Members (including the ITAT) have been specified. 

One of the eye-catching terms is the steep hike in the salary payable to the Tribunal Members who will be appointed after the Notification. 

While the President of the Tribunal is entitled to salary and allowances of Rs. 2,50,000 per month, the Members are entitled to receive Rs. 2,25,000 per month. 

It is notable that these salaries are much higher than the salaries payable to the Chief Justice of India (Rs. 1,00,000) and the judges of the Supreme Court (Rs. 90,000) and the High Court (Rs. 80,000). 

However, there are several onerous conditions attached to the appointment of the Tribunal Members which is probably intended to justify the high salary.
