Pune: Kalyaninagar’s Connoisseurs Club Faces Penalties for Garbage Burning After Alert Citizens Raise Issue With PMC
Pune, 20th October 2023: Connoisseurs Club, located in close proximity to D-Mart, has come under scrutiny from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) for its alleged involvement in illegal garbage burning activities. The PMC’s intervention followed numerous complaints from nearby residents who reported respiratory problems and other health concerns as a consequence of the burning waste.
The alert citizens of the area promptly documented the transgressions by capturing photographs and videos of the burning garbage at around 4:39 pm on October 17. These pieces of evidence were then forwarded to the vigilant Team Swach Kalyani Nagar (TSKN), which, in turn, brought the matter to the attention of PMC officials. The club is situated amidst five housing societies, amplifying the distress caused by the noxious fumes.
In their formal complaint, residents emphasized the severity of the situation, underlining that the illegal garbage burning not only caused significant discomfort but also posed a substantial threat to their well-being. It’s worth noting that such activities contravene existing environmental laws, demanding accountability from those responsible.
In response to the complaints, a health inspector from the PMC’s Yerawada Ward Office conducted on-site investigations. However, the initial visits on Tuesday and Wednesday yielded no tangible evidence of garbage burning. It was on Thursday morning that the illegal act was witnessed firsthand, leading to the imposition of fines on the club officials.
Pradipkumar Raut, the health inspector at PMC Yerawada Ward Office, stated, “Following residents’ complaints of illegal garbage burning in the Kalyaninagar area, we took prompt action. Complaints included distressing health issues such as respiratory problems, eye irritation, skin discomfort, nausea, headaches, and environmental pollution linked to the garbage burning. Some residents went the extra mile by providing photographic and video evidence of the violations. After diligent investigations, we fined the club a total of Rs 1,000 for the two days of garbage burning. In accordance with the Pune Municipal Solid Waste Management Rule, a Rs 500 fine is imposed on offenders for engaging in such hazardous practices.”
