Pune: PMC Proposes to Fell 225 Trees For New Building At Agriculture College Ground
Pune 20th Oct 2023: The Pune Municipal Corporation has proposed to fell 225 trees in the Agriculture College premises in the city for the construction of a new administrative building. A notice in this regard was issued by the civic body to invite objections on the move and many activists have come forward to oppose the felling of the trees claiming that many of them are not obstructing the construction.
The Municipal Corporation has also proposed to transplant 99 trees and plant 4,152 saplings. However, the activists have objected to the proposal claiming that many of these trees which are likely to be affected by this move are very old and they have created an ecological network. It is also claimed that some of these trees are more than 70-years old. Besides, the activists have claimed that the success rate of transplantation has been low in the last few years and the prediction based on the previous data shows that only 50% of the transplanted trees survive.
The Municipal Corporation had asked citizens to submit the objections before October 9 and many have already written to the civic body.
