Pune 18th Oct 2023: The Pune-Bengaluru Highway’s 6-km stretch near Navale Bridge is back in controversy again after four people were charred to death in a recent accident near the Swami Narayan Temple. The official data has revealed that a total of 45 people have died in 63 accidents while 40 others were injured in accidents reported within the 6-km stretch between Swami Narayan Temple and Wadgaon Bridge in the last five years.

This again highlights the need to take necessary measures to reduce the number of accidents on this stretch. The number of fatal accidents has been high on this stretch and the authorities held multiple meetings with the concerned officials to find a solution to the problem. According to the officials, the highest number of 13 deaths were reported in 2021 while 10 accidental deaths were reported in 2018 and 9 were reported in 2020.

The concerned officials and experts in the past blamed the gradient slope that comes after a sharp turn on this stretch for the frequent accidents. It is claimed that many drivers especially the ones driving heavy vehicles switch their vehicle’s ignition off at this stretch allegedly to save fuel due to which the brakes stop working and the heavy vehicles often collide with other vehicles on the road. The highway authorities have also proposed and implemented several measures to solve the problem.

It may be noted that a container truck had caught fire after hitting two other vehicles near the Swami Narayan Temple on Monday. Four people were charred to death while two others were injured in the accident. The police have booked the truck driver under sections 304(a), 279, 427, 337, 338 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) along with section 184 of the Motor Vehicle Act.
