Shivajinagar, 17th October 2023: Despite annual expenditures reaching up to 10 lakh rupees for the maintenance and repair of municipal lifts, a health department employee found himself stuck in one such lift for two hours today. The incident has cast doubts over the efficacy of the maintenance work carried out by the contractor responsible for the lifts at Pune Municipal Corporation’s main building. The trapped employee was eventually rescued by the fire brigade.

Around 5 pm today, an employee from the health department was taking the lift between the second and third floors when the lift suddenly stopped. After notifying a colleague about the situation, attempts were made to open the lift door by the Deputy Engineer of the Electricity Department. However, efforts were thwarted when it was discovered that the key to the lift control box was broken. Fire brigade personnel were ultimately called to the scene to extricate the employee using specialized tools.

The incident has raised serious questions about the quality of work performed by the contractor responsible for the lifts’ maintenance. Mahapalika Bhavan houses four lifts, and approximately 10 lakh rupees are spent annually for their upkeep. According to guidelines, these lifts should have fail-safes in place to ensure they do not stop unexpectedly and that doors can be opened immediately in such events.

Srinivas Kandul, head of the electrical department, stated, “This is a serious incident. The contractor and relevant sub-engineers need to prioritize the maintenance and repairs of these lifts. Notices will be issued, and appropriate action will be taken against those responsible.”
