Pimpri, 17th October 2023: In a startling incident that unfolded on Tuesday morning, the Sinhagad Express (Train No. 11010), the first train from Pune to Mumbai, left two passengers seriously injured when it failed to make its scheduled stop, creating chaos among the commuters.

The Sinhagad Express is a popular choice for passengers travelling between Pune and Mumbai, departing from Pune Railway Station at 6.05 a.m. and reaching Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai at 9.55 a.m. The train typically makes halts at stations including Shivajinagar, Khadki, Pimpri, Chinchwad, Lonavala, Karjat, Kalyan, and Dadar, making it a convenient choice for regular commuters.

The incident occurred as the train was approaching Pimpri and Chinchwad stations. Instead of making its customary stop, it halted a short distance away, catching passengers by surprise. In their haste to board their daily coaches, a stampede ensued, leading to chaos and injuries.

Pimpri’s market remains closed on Tuesdays, prompting a surge in traders travelling to Mumbai by the Sinhagad Express for their shopping needs. This heightened passenger rush further exacerbated the situation.

At Pimpri railway station, the train arrived at 6.30 am, with some daring to attempt boarding the moving train. However, the fast-moving train thwarted their efforts. As the train continued its journey without stopping at the usual spot, passengers on the platform began to run, resulting in several individuals becoming stranded. Two passengers sustained serious injuries during the commotion.

One of the injured passengers, Sunil Memon, found himself trapped between the train and the platform, ultimately falling onto the railway tracks. His injuries included damage to three toes, as well as injuries to his back and stomach. After receiving primary treatment at the municipal hospital, he was subsequently transferred to a private hospital in Bhosari for further medical attention.

Sunil Memon expressed his concerns, stating, “Sinhgad Express did not stop at the place where it used to stop at Pimpri railway station today. As she went some distance, there was a rush of passengers at the railway station. Some of the passengers fell on the platform. Due to the push of the passengers, I fell on the railway track between the platform and the train. I didn’t even get a first aid facility at the railway station.”

Iqbal Mulani, President of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Railway Passengers Association, urged the railway administration to address the situation seriously. He stated, “The Sinhgad Express did not stop at the scheduled place, and the train was running at high speed, causing the passengers to run away. Some passengers have been injured. The railway administration should pay serious attention to this. After the train reaches the platform, the speed of the train should be reduced.”
