Pune 17th Oct 2023: The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has provided training to the drivers to further avoid complete dependency on the contractors. The decision to train the PMPML drivers was taken in August this year after the drivers working with E-buses owned by contractors had suddenly announced a strike over various demands.

According to the PMPML officials, a total 484 drivers have been provided training to drive E-buses. The transport body currently has 2,089 buses in its fleet of which, 991 buses are owned by PMPML while 1,098 buses are owned by contractors. The buses owned by contractors include 640 CNG operated buses and 458 Electric buses.

It may be noted that in August this year, many drivers working on E-buses owned by contractors had suddenly announced the strike due to which the bus service for commuters was affected. The PMPML officials after this incident realised the need to train its own drivers for E-buses to avoid complete dependency on the contractors and create an alternative to continue the essential service in the city. The officials also said that an initiative to provide other trainings to improve driving skills and better communication with the commuters was also launched on August 27 this year and a total of 978 drivers have been already provided training.
