Pune : 25 Cases Of Sandalwood Theft Reported In Last 9 Months, 82 Cases Reported In Four Years

Pune 16th Oct 2023: The incidents of sandalwood theft continue to be on rise as a total of 25 cases have been reported in the city in the last nine months. Many of these incidents have been reported at the most secure places including those owned by the government and defence authorities.

Many places where the thefts are reported even have security guards to protect the properties but the sandalwood thieves have managed to cut the trees and flee safely. According to the city police data, a total of 82 cases have been reported in the last four years having majority of them falling in the zone 4 of the Pune city police commissionerate.

According to officials, out of 25 cases reported in the city this year, 13 were reported from areas that fall in the jurisdiction of Khadki, Chaturshringi, Dattawadi, Alankar and Khadki police stations. The police have also managed to solve around 10 to 11 of these cases and a pattern has also been identified. According to police officials, the stolen sandalwood trees are mostly transported to Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh by thieves where they are sold.

Among the most secure places where sandalwood theft cases have been reported in the past include Rajbhavan, Khadki Ammunition Factory, National Chemical Laboratory (NCL), National Institute for Business Management (NIBM) and several properties owned by central as well as state governments, defence personnel.
