Military Police Constable Duped By Cyber Fraudster On Pretext Of Verifying Sim Card Linked With Bank, Case Registered

Pune 13th Oct 2023: In ayet another incident of cyber fraud reported in the city, a military constable working with the Army Institute of Cardio Thoracic Science was duped by a cyber criminal of Rs 5 lakh by allegedly taking a loan on his name by installing an application on his phone. The incident took place between August 18 and 19 of this year and the case was registered on Wednesday.

According to the complaint registered with the police, the victim was contacted by the accused on pretext of verifying his sim card that is linked to his bank account. The accused asked him to recharge his number using the operator’s application but the recharge failed. Later he asked the victim to recharge using a bank application but that also failed after which he asked the military constable to download an application which gave remote access of his cellphone to the accused.

The accused dropped a call assuring a callback from the concerned officials from the customer care to address the issue. However, the victim later received a message that a loan of Rs 8 lakh has been sanctioned and the amount has been deposited into his account. Before he realised the fraud the accused got Rs 5 lakh transferred to another bank account. After realising that he has been duped, the military constable approached police to lodge a complaint in the matter. The police have booked an unidentified caller in the case under relevant sections at Wanawadi Police Station. Further investigation in the matter is underway.
