Pune: PCMC Hosts Workshop on Low Emission Zones in Collaboration with UK Partners

Pimpri, 12th October 2023: The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), in collaboration with the British Deputy High Commission and the non-profit organization Cenex, hosted a groundbreaking workshop on Low Emission Zones (LEZs) in Pimpri. The event took place on Thursday and aimed to provide valuable guidance on the establishment of LEZs in the area, drawing insights from the United Kingdom’s extensive experience and case studies.

The workshop saw the participation of key figures and officials, including PCMC Commissioner Shekhar Singh, and Steve Carroll, Head of Transport at CENEX UK.

In his opening speech, Commissioner Shekhar Singh underscored the corporation’s commitment to sustainable mobility, citing initiatives such as “Harit Setu” and an Electric Vehicle readiness plan. He acknowledged the challenges of implementing LEZs in a rapidly growing city like Pimpri-Chinchwad and emphasized the importance of a gradual approach, focusing on leveraging data, technology, and active citizen engagement.

Singh also highlighted PCMC’s ongoing collaborations with various stakeholders, including government bodies, businesses, institutes, NGOs, and the community, as they collectively strive to address the critical issue of reducing pollution levels in the area.

Steve Carroll of Cenex provided an insightful overview of the progress made on the draft toolkit and city-specific action plans. The workshop encouraged active participation in the co-design process through breakout sessions, facilitating the collection of valuable feedback for the final toolkit. Additionally, the workshop aimed to identify and address potential barriers to implementing the action plan effectively.
