Pune, 11th October 2023: The Pune Municipal Corporation has announced its decision to make Marriage Registration Certificates available in the central government’s ‘Digi Locker’ app. This digital transformation initiative is set to revolutionize the way couples handle their marriage registration certificates for various legal purposes, including inheritance.

Traditionally, individuals seeking to prove their marital status for activities such as purchasing a house, opening a bank account, securing loans, or making inheritance claims have had to carry physical copies of their marriage registration certificates. However, Pune residents will soon find respite from this cumbersome practice, as the Pune Municipal Corporation takes a progressive step toward digitalization.

The process of integrating Marriage Registration Certificates into ‘Digi Locker’ is currently undergoing testing at various levels. It is expected that certificates from the year 2008 onwards will be available in ‘Digi Locker’ within the next month, offering a convenient and secure alternative to the physical document.

Marriage registration certificates hold paramount importance in India, as they are necessary to legally validate a marriage under the Hindu Marriage Act and the Special Marriage Act. These laws not only bestow legal recognition upon the marriage but also establish the legal responsibilities and rights of both parties involved. In 2006, the Supreme Court of India made it mandatory for women to possess a marriage certificate to access their rights fully.

Marriages in Pune have been registered online since 2008, with 15 zonal offices of the Municipal Corporation overseeing the process. Upon registration, the issuance of the certificate is compulsory within 15 days, provided the necessary documents and fees from the bride and groom have been submitted, and the Ward Medical Officer has given their approval.

The Pune Municipal Corporation’s decision to include the marriage registration certificate in ‘Digi Locker’ aligns with its ongoing efforts to modernize services and provide greater convenience to the city’s residents. ‘Digi Locker’ already contains essential documents such as Aadhaar, PAN, driver’s licenses, academic certificates, and tax records, making it a one-stop digital repository for crucial personal documents. Now, with the integration of marriage registration certificates, citizens will no longer need to carry their physical certificates, as they can access them securely via the app.

Pune Municipal Corporation has made substantial progress in digitizing records since 2008, with approximately 10 thousand marriages registered annually. The synchronization of this wealth of information with ‘Digi Locker’ is currently in progress and is expected to be made available to citizens next month.

This forward-thinking initiative by the Pune Municipal Corporation is set to simplify the lives of its residents by eliminating the need to carry physical marriage registration certificates and joining the league of digital cities in India. With the marriage registration certificate soon to be accessible through ‘Digi Locker,’ Pune is paving the way for a more convenient and efficient future.

Rahul Jagtap, Head of Computer Department, PMC said, “Municipal Corporation has started work to make marriage registration certificates available in Digi Locker. This service will be available next month. It will have certificates from 2008 onwards. PMC is the first municipality in the country to make marriage registration certificates available in Digi Locker.”
