Pune: Eco-Friendly Ganesh Idols Made By Yerawada Jail Inmates Bring Rs 1.76 Lakh Revenue For Jail

Pune 6th Oct 2023: In a unique initiative run by the jail authorities, the eco-friendly ganesh idols made by the inmates were made available for sale for the citizens for the ganesh festival. The inmates were provided proper training to make idols using eco-friendly material and the idols were out for sale for common people to purchase. The initiative was implemented at four different jails across the state.

According to officials, a total of 172 idols worth Rs 1,76,000 made by inmates at Yerawada Central Prison were sold this year. The highest sale was recorded in Nashik where a total of 580 ganesh idols worth Rs 9,72,643 were sold. Similarly, a total of 200 idols worth Rs 1,25,000 made by inmates of Amravati jail were sold. The initiative is being organised for the last few years at these jails and this time the jail authorities had also initiated it at Dhule jail where a total of 101 idols worth Rs 1,44,700 were sold.

The inmates were provided training to make different designs of idols inside the jail including Shreemant Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati of Pune, Lalbaugcha Raja of Mumbai etc. The jail authorities said that the prisoners were working for around 3 to 4 months for the initiative. Such initiatives, according to officials, help bring the prisoners into the mainstream.
