Beating Obesity: Pune’s Sassoon Hospital Marks Success With Free Bariatric Surgeries

Pune, 5th October 2023: Maharashtra State-Government run Sassoon General Hospital has successfully performed more than eight bariatric surgeries (obesity reduction surgeries) in the past two months. This includes a 33-year-old man from Solapur who underwent the procedure today.
The surgeries are part of a free service that has been available for the last 10 months under the guidance of the hospital’s dean, Dr Sanjeev Thakur.
The hospital offers a variety of surgeries free of charge, including hernia, gall bladder, appendix, kidney disease, and bariatric surgeries. These procedures are part of an obesity awareness campaign.
The 33-year-old patient had been struggling with obesity for several years, putting him at risk for high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, and heart disease. His sedentary job and lack of exercise contributed to his weight gain, and despite trying various remedies, he did not achieve satisfactory results.
After learning about the benefits of bariatric surgery from a person who had successfully undergone the procedure at Sassoon Hospital, the patient decided to opt for the surgery. He was admitted on October 3 and underwent the surgery under the guidance of Dean Dr Sanjeev Thakur, Assistant Professor of Surgery department Dr Amey Thakur, Dr Chaitanya Gaikwad, and their team.
The patient underwent a sleeve gastrectomy, a type of bariatric surgery that reduces a portion of the stomach according to the patient’s BMI. This allows the patient to consume only the amount of food necessary for his body.
“Bariatric surgery is often considered cosmetic surgery worldwide. However, it can save a patient’s body from dangerous diseases and should be considered a life-saving surgery,” said Dr. Amey Thakur.
