AFMC Pune Hosts Successful CME on Legal and Ethical Healthcare Issues

Wanowrie, 16th September 2023: The Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) Pune, renowned for its commitment to excellence in medical education, recently concluded a highly successful CME “HEAL – 2023 on Legal and Ethical Issues in Healthcare.”

The event organized by Dept. of Hospital Administration, AFMC was held from 14 – 15 Sep 2023 and brought together a diverse array of medical professionals, legal experts, and scholars to explore the complex intersections of medical practice, law, and ethics.

The Director and Commandant of Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Lt Gen Narendra Kotwal, SM, VSM, welcomed the dignitaries, including the Chief Guest, Lt Gen Arindam Chatterjee, AVSM, VSM, DGMS (Army) & Col Comdt, Prof (Dr) Shakti Kumar Gupta, Executive Director & CEO, AIIMS, Jammu, Former DGAFMS Gen NK Parmar and Former DGMS (Air) Air Marshal Pawan Kapoor. Maj Gen D Vivekanand, Dean & Dy Comdt, AFMC also graced the occasion.

A spectrum of critical topics provided attendees with a comprehensive understanding of the legal and ethical dimensions of modern healthcare. Discussions centred around legal frameworks, risk management strategies and patient safety. Ethical considerations surrounding organ donation & transplantation were examined in depth. Experts shed light on consent processes, professional indemnity insurance and the delicate balance between saving lives and maintaining ethical standards.

Practical guidance on navigating medicolegal challenges, case studies and interactive sessions offered valuable insights to one and all into mitigating risks and managing legal complexities. Session on the Right to Information (RTI) highlighted the rights and responsibilities of healthcare institutions when responding to RTI requests.

The success of the CME is a testament to AFMC’s commitment to holistic medical education and its dedication to shaping responsible and ethically conscious healthcare professionals.
