Pune 11th Sept 2023: The water resource department of Maharashtra has levelled serious allegations against the Pune Municipal Corporation and it has demanded the civic body to pay Rs 650 Crore due for allegedly drawing additional water in the last few years. It is alleged that the municipal corporation has diverted the water meant for the domestic purpose to commercial use.

The state water resource department has claimed that the PMC has been supplying 10% of the total water to the industrial purpose despite having permission to supply only 2.5% of the water. As a result, the officials have asked the PMC to pay dues as per commercial rates and have demanded the civic body to pay Rs 650 Crore for supplying the water meant for domestic purpose to commercial in the last few years.

However, the civic body has denied this claim and said that the civic body has not earned money as per commercial rate by supplying water to the industries as claimed by the state water resource department. The officials said that the consumers are only provided water for the drinking purpose and if anyone is using it for industrial purposes then the municipal corporation is not made aware of it. According to officials, the water resource department has charged PMC for water on a per tonne basis while the civic body claims that it should be charged on a per litre basis.

Water used for the domestic purpose is charged as per Rs 55 paise per litre per person while charges for commercial purpose are Rs 18 per tonne. The civic officials have objected to the due payment demanded by the state water resource department and they have called a meeting with the concerned authorities on September 11.
