Pune 6th Sept 2023: The district administration has started taking action against tenants who have acquired the government properties through illegal possession and have refused to return or pay rent to the concerned departments over the last few years. The decision to take action has been taken after the district collectorate has received complaints from various departments seeking help to acquire these properties. The district administration has issued notices to these tenants. So far, 37 such properties have been taken back by the administration while complaints have been received about a total of 245 properties.

In Pune city, the properties in question include spaces owned by Yerwada Mental Hospital, Sasoon Hospital, Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal (PMPML), and properties owned by the public works department in the Camp area. Some of these properties include shops owned by the mental hospital and PMPML that were rented out on an annual rent basis. Many of these tenants had been residing or conducting business for several years, initially agreeing to pay rent according to the terms of their lease agreements. However, some tenants stopped paying the agreed-upon rent over time. As a result, there were significant arrears owed to the respective departments. When the departments requested the outstanding rent, some tenants refused to comply, said officials.

In addition to Pune, the Pimpri-Chinchwad New Township Development Authority and Junnar Municipal Council have also registered complaints with the district collector about their properties. There are a total of 147 properties within the Pimpri-Chinchwad New Township Development Authority that have been leased out or sold to citizens. Some citizens paid only a fraction of the agreed-upon amount, while others refused to pay the outstanding dues. In the case of the 47 unauthorized properties within Yerwada Mental Hospital, some employees have been occupying them without proper authorization since 2002.

The district collector has received complaints from various departments about illegal possession of their properties by tenants. The matters have been pending with the administration for over 10 years but the district administration has now started initiating action against these tenants to get back the properties owned by various departments of the government. The officials have said that notices are being issued to such tenants and 37 such properties have been already taken back under this initiative.
