About the Book: India’s education system owes a significant debt of gratitude to the remarkable Savitribai Phule. When Savitribai Phule and Jyotiba Phule established the first girls’ school in 1848, they were ousted from their own home. Fatima Shaikh provided them refuge and also became a teacher and headmistress at the school. The flame of education ignited by their efforts had far-reaching implications. This book brings to the forefront the tale of their often overlooked friendship, placing it squarely in the public consciousness.
