Pune 7th August 2023: The activists from Pune working closely with Mahatma Gandhi Smarak organisation have moved a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) before the Bombay High Court to seek guidelines from the court to stop defamation of historical figures by people. The petition has been moved after a derogatory statement was made by hindutva leader Sambhaji Bhide against Mahatma Gandhi.

The petitioner including Dr Kumar Saptarshi, Anwar Rajan and Sandip Barve have moved the PIL before the Bombay High Court on August 3. The activists in their petition claimed that despite having Indian Penal (IPC) Sections 499 and 500 to deal with defamation cases, the scope of these sections is limited when it comes to historical figures.
